Reset Your Body, Reset Your Life: So What’s Really Involved Here?

16195003_10154316466261586_4086759262820818237_n

First of all, if you don’t know me, I’m the BIGGEST procrastinator in the world!! I finished my cleanse at the end of February and it’s now April and I’m just getting around to writing about my journey.  At least I’m writing about, right?!

“So, what’s really involved with this cleanse?” A question I get asked ALL the time.  Most people hear the word ‘cleanse’ and think you have to starve or drink only juice for a week. That’s not the case here! This is the real deal, inner body tune up!

What I love about this cleanse is that it’s not just a something that helps your body eliminate waste, gently and naturally, but it helps revitalize your mind and body, and refuel your body with the micronutrients and macronutrients it craves.

This 21 day program was designed with three distinct phases, each lasting for seven days, to get you back to a healthy state.

In Phase One, you reclaim your body and prepare the inner chemistry for change. The gradual removal of red meat and dairy will remove added stress that is normally put onto the digestive system. To go along with the three meals and one snack allotted each day, the first seven days introduce you to four cleanse aiding supplements-Power Greens, Mineralize, Optimize, and Soothe.  These supplements and well planned meals are critical in restoring proper hydration (that most of us neglect) and help the body maintain the body’s alkaline/acidic balance. This week long process will properly prime, balance, and nourish your body to continue on the detoxing journey.

In Phase Two, you being to release unwanted compounds that have been holding your system back. This is the start of the detoxification process.  This phase of the cleanse offers a gentle colon cleanse and digestive support. At this point in the process, your diet has transitioned to a full vegan diet.  During this second week, you are also adding another supplement to your daily routine-Detox. This was designed to help optimize the body’s ability to eliminate unwanted substances. Not only will you experience the release of waste from your digestive tract, but you may find your body releasing in other ways. It is very common to see increased skin breakouts, releasing toxic emotions, or dropping negative habits you’ve been holding on to.  This process can effect everyone differently, so be open to the process and allow it to work for you.

Phase Three brings restoration to the digestive system and other internal processes. This phase puts nutrients and enzymes back into the body as well as provides vital pre- and pro-biotics. The third phase will cut out grains completely, leaving you on a mostly vegetable and fruit diet to give the digestive system a break. During this final phase, you will be introduced to the last supplement-Revitalize.  This was designed to restore the natural bacteria to your freshly cleansed digestive tract, something that most cleanses often neglect!

Completing all three phases can certainly be challenging but with a little extra effort the results can be extraordinary! And the results are totally sustainable with the transition period in the weeks that follow. Advice on food and exercise, along with helpful tips and ways to continue to build are all included with the program so you don’t revert back to your old ways.

Sound like something you need? Comment on this post and let’s have a conversation to determine if this is right for you.

Vegan Chili

IMG_20170305_200840 (1)

I completed a 21 day cleanse a couple weeks ago and ever since completing it, I have been trying to stay on a vegan diet. My body seems to function so much better when I remove animal products from my diet. When my hubby decided he wanted chili one day, I thought it would be nice to find a way to join him, that didn’t mean I had to consume meat.

After searching online for vegan chili recipes, I decided to combine a few together and make it my own. I made a huge pot for a week’s worth of lunches and it’s even more amazing the second and third days!! Here is the recipe for you to enjoy.

Ingredients:
2 Tbs olive oil
1 medium white onion, chopped
1 1/2 tsp Himalayan Pink Salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1 tsp ground cumin
2 Tbs chili powder
1 1/2 cups each of cooked kidney, black and garbanzo beans (or 1 (15oz) can of each – drained and rinsed. discard the fluid)
6 oz tomato paste
2 28 oz cans crushed tomato
8 oz vegetable broth
1/2 cup frozen corn
1/2 cup frozen edamame

Directions:
Sauté onions in olive oil until tender. Add spices and cook additional 1 – 2 minutes. Add tomato paste and stir for 1 minute. Add remaining ingredients and heat, covered, over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, for about 30-45 mins.

Banana Smoothie Pancakes

Holy Pancakes!!!
I grew up in Kentucky, home to KFC and four major food groups; meat, carbs, fat, and sugar. When I used to think about becoming a vegan, I found it super overwhelming!! Kentucky is definitely behind the times, so finding good whole foods and animal protein alternatives can be difficult depending on the seasons.

I recently completed a three week long cleanse that helped me transition into more of a vegan lifestyle and I actually found it quite easy! Educating myself on the most nutritious foods and the types that can offer high amounts of protein are probably what made this journey a lot less taxing. I’m very proud of my success so far and I’m excited to see how it goes in the next few months.

Along my journey I came across a lovely pancake recipe. I was sooo delighted because I LOVE carbs. Pancakes used to be one of my favorite breakfast items until I became aware of how horrible they made me feel. Now, I can enjoy them AND get in lots of nutrients from replacing the ingredients I use!

Here is the recipe for these scrumptious breakfast cakes:

Pancake Ingredients:
1 heaping cup of rolled oats (use gluten-free if needed)
1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 ripe banana
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
1 Tbsp. pure maple syrup
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Topping Ingredients:
1/2 cup blueberries
2 Tbsp. pure maple syrup

Pancake Directions:
1) Combine all pancake ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
2) Allow the batter to rest for 5-10 minutes. This gives the oats time to soak up the liquid and thicken up.
3) Preheat a pan coated with coconut oil over medium high heat. Once hot, pour in 1/4 cup of batter.
4) Cook for 1-2 minutes or until you can easily slide a spatula underneath. Flip and cook on opposite side for 1-2 minutes.
5) Repeat until all the batter is used up.

Topping Directions:
1) Place blueberries in a small saucepan on high heat.
2) Heat until berries are slightly oosing  with juice.
3) Remove from heat and add in pure maple syrup.
4) Pour over your stack of pancakes and ENJOY!

Happy Eating,
Carmen

Reset Your Body, Reset Your Life: Acne Attack

16864775_10154386376916586_2637361868906419677_n

This is super hard for me to talk about because let’s be honest, I love putting on makeup and most people don’t see what’s underneath. I used to be ashamed of what I looked like. I never felt beautiful unless I had my ‘face’ on.
.
For years I struggled with acne. I thought it was just the whole teenage puberty thing, but when I never grew out of it, my self esteem dropped. I grew up with the impression that everyone had to be perfect. The perfect hair, the perfect skin, the perfect sense of fashion. I had NONE of that!!  I wanted soooo badly to fit in but I was the girl who tried way to hard to impress people. I wore makeup that I thought was great, but was made fun of for my lack of application skills. I was trying hard to cover up any imperfections! (and there were a lot!)

When I started taking birth control, in my late teens, it all my skin problems went away. I was thrilled! People actually started to comment on how good my skin looked. That just boosted my confidence and gave me the motivation to work more on fixing myself. Work more towards finding out who I was and how I could love myself. I mean let’s face it, I felt great knowing I looked better on the outside, but I was still missing self love on the inside.

Fast forward 8 years and my hormones start to get funky. I’m starting to have pre-menopausal symptoms and my acne was coming back. Not having the options of taking medication to treat my problems, I had to find another way to combat the problems. That’s when I realized the ONLY relief I could get was to change to a healthier lifestyle and ridding my body for toxins and impurities eating real whole foods. After a year of this new lifestyle, my face cleared up and I was back to the old me. But of course, I let myself fall back to old habits and my poor eating choices throughout the holidays brought back my breakouts.

THIS is why I’m cleansing. My body is holding on to so many toxins that it is clogging my pores and causing my breakouts. Detoxing the body can stop this completely and continued maintenance can prevent breakouts all together. I never thought I’d say this, but this is what healthy acne looks like. This cleanse is helping my skin, the body’s largest organ, eliminate impurities and toxins. This is a sign that my cleanse is still working and that I’m soon to be back to having healthy looking skin. Back to a balanced system. That’s the ultimate self love!
.
This picture was from the first week of my cleanse. My acne is getting better and I’m so excited to see the end results. Goodbye toxic cheats, hello glowing skin!!

I’m still dreaming about the tacos I had last Tuesday night!!!

As I venture on my 21 Day Detox journey,  I am discovering new ingredients and new recipes that are absolutely DELICIOUS!! Last week, my dinner for day two was a nice plate of vegetarian tacos. When I read the recipe, I thought it would seem kind of bland with all the rice and beans, but to my surprise, this has become one of my new favorite taco fillings!! The ingredients are basic but when put together, it’s like a flavor explosion in your mouth!!

Here is the recipe for the fantastic rice and beans mixture to go inside your tacos. I combined a 1/4 cup of corn kernels with my rice and beans, served on warm corn tortillas, and served with homemade guacamole.
.
Ingredients
-1/2 cup black beans
-1/4 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
-1 dash of chili powder
-1 pinch of cumin
-1/4 tsp. coriander
-1 tsp. of Bragg’s Liquid Aminos
-Himalayan pink salt to taste
-3/4 cup cooked brown rice
.
Instructions
Combine beans, oil, spices, aminos, and salt in a sauce pan. Mix well and heat over medium heat. Cook for 1 or 2 minutes or until heated through. Remove from heat and fold in rice.

YUM!!

Reset Your Body, Reset Your Life: The Journey Begins

201790-henry-rollins-quote-keep-your-blood-clean-your-body-lean-and-your
You’re 116 lbs, why in the hell do you need to go on a cleanse? Don’t you know you’re already skinny enough as it is? People are going to think you are crazy!!! 21 days with NO coffee, alcohol, or dinners out? NO Valentine’s Day sweets? Yea, I’ll believe it when I see it!!

This are all the things that ran through my mind for over a YEAR!!! I had heard so many amazing things about this 3 week detox that my company promotes, but yet I had always been so skeptical to try it. I knew this cleanse was to help with weight loss and get the body back on track, but I had never really seen anyone go through who has NO weight to lose. This scared me. Not only did I have the thoughts mentioned above, but I wondered if I’d even be able to make it through the day. Would I get enough calories? Could I still coach gymnastics and work on the farm? I’m those two things keep me pretty active.

After a year of research, hearing success stories, and getting out of my own head, I remembered a quote I once read. “Great things never came from comfort zones.” For the last year and a half I’ve been living my life by this quote!! It has brought me great opportunities and good fortune, so after remembering this simple little thing, I finally said ‘why not?’ to this whole cleanse thing. What do I REALLY have to lose? If anything, this will be a learning experience for all of us!!

I ordered my program, that included my supplements for 21 days and an entire guide of food and meal plans to follow. When my kit came in the mail, I was quite surprised by how in depth the guide goes into explaining the detoxification process. Everything from why this cleanse helps the body, how it helps the body function, why you shouldn’t exercise while cleansing, things to promote the cleansing process, to the exact meals to eat every day including a grocery list for each week, snack ideas, recipes for each meal, and a separate eating plan for those always on the run. I was amazed at how easy this whole thing seemed. Read the directions. Do what the book says. Follow the program to a T. See fantastic results.

And so, this journey begins!! I slip on this natural fiber bracelet (that came with my kit) as a commitment to myself and my body’s health. THIS bracelet serves as a reminder, for the next 21 days, about the positive decision I’ve made to be the healthiest me! The decision to rid my body of the toxins, pollutants, and impurities my body has struggled to process for MANY years.

Stay tuned! I plan on documenting my ENTIRE journey!

Yoga on a FREAKING Horse!!

15036267_10154093905846586_8241334008348364620_n

In July of 2016, I met the most amazing woman named Niki. She was a fellow teammate and coach who I had connected with online, and finally got to meet face to face one hot summer day. She had such an electrifying energy and I was consumed by her. We talked for hours and hours about life, the universe, and our dreams. It was one of the most unforgettable meetings I’ve had with a person.

What intrigued me most about Niki was her ability to practice yoga on her horse. She is a woman of many talents, but this one seemed to pull me in. I HAD to try this! My love of nature, animals, and all things yoga had my heart stuck on one day finding a horse that would give me the pleasure of living out one of my dreams. Honestly, I had no idea how I was going to accomplish this dream or when I would have the opportunity, but I told myself it was going to happen.

The Universe works in mysterious ways my friends. While all this was going on in my life, my friend Paul was embarking on a journey he had always dreamed of. He was transitioning into a farm management role and given an opportunity to expand. Paul invited me out to the farm, once he got settled, and we started discussing nutrition and meal plans. Over the course of the following week, I helped him not only with his health, but assisted with a few things here and there on the farm.

This interaction grew our friendship and with continuous visits on and off the clock, a decision was made to that I was needed part-time to help out. With daily visits to the farm, I was introduced to HORSES!! At first there was no thought of me EVER getting on one of these. The horses on this particular farm are yearlings, untrained, and full of personality. Whether they are being boarded, in quarantine, or starting their training, these are not the type of horses to just hop on and go.

One day, I arrived at the farm and I noticed a new horse. A beautiful reddish brown creature with beefy muscles and burrs in his mane. Curly was a 4 year old race horse who had an injury that knocked him out of the starting gates. He had been in a grazing field for a while before being transported to the farm, so we had a little bit of work to do with him.

Paul started training him in the round pin. This was an interesting process to watch. He had been doing this for years and worked up his own secret technique to breaking horses humanly. After a few days of training Paul came to the realization that Curly was going to be his work horse. He would be able to ride Curly around to check fences, feed, and water troughs reducing his consumption on diesel and reducing his carbon footprint.

A couple weeks later, and Curly was continuing to show tremendous improvement in his training. Paul had decided that Curly was ready. Ready for me to try yoga with him. I had once expressed my dream of trying yoga on a horse and had told him about my friend Niki who regularly practices on horseback. He was about to make that dream come true!

Not going to lie…I was SCARED!!!! Of course, I wasn’t going to say no to this opportunity, but I had NO experience or instructions on how to do yoga on horseback. I’m an Aries and super competitive, so I decided to just figure it out! HAHA. Luckily, I had ridden a horse once when I was like 7 or 8. And then once when I was a teenager. So, that pretty much made me an expert. :p

I mounted Curly and felt pretty comfortable in the saddle. Paul held Curly still with the lead rope and told me have at it. My heart started racing and my started sweating A LOT! I could start to feel my anxiety kick in, but then I remembered, you’re doing yoga dumbass. It’s supposed to be relaxing and calming. Realizing I was making a fuss over nothing, I started to connect with my breath.

Inhale, exhale. I swung my legs back and planted my feet on the saddle. Inhale, exhale. My heart beat starts to lower and I feel more connected to Curly than I ever have. He walks around a little and feel a little unstable, but Paul assures me he isn’t going anywhere. I plant my hands wide on the top of the saddle. Inhale, exhale. I start to move my toes to the top edge on the back of the saddle. Curly moves again and again, testing my trust in him and testing his trust in me.

Inhale, exhale. I place my knees on my triceps aiming my knee caps for my armpits. Pressing down on the backs of my arms, I start to lift one foot. I play with my balance a little shifting as needed from the sway of the horse. Engaging my core, I lift my other foot to meet the first. I get all of 3 seconds of hang time.

A feeling of relief and excitement rolls over me. In the moment of this amazing feat, I was speechless. I had so many emotions running through my brain that I couldn’t comprehend what had just happened. I just did yoga on a freaking horse! Yoga on a freaking horse who isn’t full trained. Thank you!! Thank you!! Literally the only thing I can say.

After processing all that it took to cross this off my bucket list, I came to realize that I had this amazing dream with absolutely no idea of how I would accomplish it one day. One of the things I teach my clients, is about the Law of Attraction. The law of what you put out into the universe you shall receive in return. I personally practice this in my lifestyle and it has opened doors I never thought possible. Opportunities I never knew existed. I know that if I hadn’t put the dream of doing yoga on a horse out into the universe, that one summer night in July, I wouldn’t be writing this blog post today.

Ask and you shall receive. Receive and give thanks. Repeat. My formula for doing yoga on a horse.
